Broken concrete from a patio removal goes in a 10 or 15-yard dumpster, loaded no higher than halfway up the walls. A 10 × 12 ft patio poured 4 inches thick is about 1.5 cubic yards of solid concrete. Keep the load concrete-only and it qualifies for clean-fill pricing.

How much concrete does a patio removal make?

Multiply length by width by thickness in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. A 10 × 12 ft patio at 4 inches is 40 cubic feet, or about 1.5 cubic yards of solid concrete. Broken pieces take more room than the slab did, because of the gaps between them.

Solid volume before breaking. Size suggestions are typical and assume a 4-inch slab; thicker slabs need the next size up or a second haul.

Why can concrete only fill half the dumpster?

Concrete is so dense that weight, not space, sets the limit. Our rule: concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in a 10-yard or 15-yard, loaded no higher than halfway up the walls. A full load would push the truck past legal highway weight; Texas caps a loaded truck at 80,000 lb gross (Transp. Code §621.101).

What counts as a clean concrete load?

A clean load is concrete only. No trash, wood, sod or mixed debris. Clean, unmixed loads qualify for our clean-fill pricing, which is lower than mixed-debris pricing. If you're also removing dirt, ask whether to load it separately.

How do I load broken concrete?

  • Break the slab into pieces you can lift safely and lay them flat across the floor.
  • Spread the weight evenly from front to back; don't pile it at one end.
  • Stop at the halfway line, even if the dumpster looks empty.
  • Keep wood forms and trash out, or the load loses clean-fill pricing.

Can I put a concrete patio in a 20-yard dumpster?

Concrete can't go in a 20 or 30-yard dumpster. Even half full, those sizes would be over legal road weight. Book a 10 or 15-yard.

Does rebar or wire mesh ruin a clean load?

Ask when you book. Clean-fill rules depend on what the receiving facility accepts, so dispatch confirms it for your load.
