When is storm and hail season in North Texas?
Severe weather in North Texas peaks in spring, and the NWS Fort Worth office says large hail falls somewhere in the Metroplex nearly every year. Hail-damaged roofs drive most storm dumpster rentals. Fallen limbs and soaked carpet and drywall follow wind and flooding.
Two storms show the scale. On April 11, 2016, a supercell over Wylie in Collin County dropped hail up to 5.25 inches, a record for the NWS Fort Worth area, and damaged about 80% of the city's homes (NWS summary of the April 11, 2016 storm). On June 13, 2012, hail up to 4.25 inches hit Dallas, Collin and Fannin counties, one of the costliest hailstorms in Texas history (NWS summary of the June 13, 2012 storm).
Season: NWS Fort Worth.
What size dumpster do I need after a storm?
A hail-damaged roof is sized by squares: a 20-yard fits up to about 28 squares of one-layer shingles. Fallen limbs and brush fit a 15 or 20-yard. Water-soaked carpet and drywall fit a 15 or 20-yard, but wet debris is heavy, so watch the included tons.
| Storm debris | Usual size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hail roof, one layer | 15-yard–30-yard | About 210 lb per square. See the roofing page. |
| Fallen limbs and brush | 15-yard or 20-yard | Cut limbs short and lay them flat. |
| Flood-soaked carpet and drywall | 15-yard or 20-yard | Wet debris weighs more. |
| Fence panels and posts | 15-yard | Concrete footings count as heavy debris. |
Typical sizing. Roofing dumpster sizes by squares.
How fast can I get a dumpster after a storm?
Book by 3 PM for guaranteed next-day delivery between 7 AM and 5 PM. Same-day delivery is possible when a truck is free, for a $50 rush fee. Book as soon as your roofer sets a tear-off date, so the dumpster lands before the crew does.
You don't need to be home for delivery if the drop spot is clear. The driver texts or calls 20–30 minutes before arriving.
Will storm debris go over the weight limit?
Storm debris goes over the weight limit more often than cleanout junk, because shingles and wet materials are heavy. Shingles weigh about 210 lb per square. Water adds weight to carpet, pad and drywall. Extra weight costs $75 per ton, billed by the pound.
Cover the open dumpster between loads so rain doesn't add weight. Keep the scale ticket that comes with your invoice; it shows the date and net weight of the haul. Read how dumpster weight is billed.
What can't go in a storm cleanup dumpster?
Shingles, limbs, fence boards, soaked carpet, drywall and damaged furniture can all go in a storm cleanup dumpster, loaded below the rim. Fuel, chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in. Flooded fridges and freezers go in for $50 each because of their Freon.
Not allowed in any dumpster
- Hazardous chemicals, solvents and pool chemicals
- Wet or liquid paint
- Batteries of any kind, including car batteries
- Motor oil, fuel and other liquids
Texas landfills can't accept lead-acid batteries, used oil or bulk liquids (30 TAC §330.15).
Allowed for $50 each
- Mattresses and box springs
- Car and truck tires
- Fridges, freezers, window AC units and other Freon appliances
These cost more because the landfill must process them separately.
Storm debris dumpster questions
Should I wait for the insurance adjuster before filling the dumpster?
Photograph the damage first and follow your insurer's instructions on what to keep for inspection. Then load the debris.
Can storm-soaked carpet and drywall go in?
Soaked carpet, pad and drywall can go in. Water adds weight, so let them drain where you can and cover the dumpster.
Can a fallen tree go in the dumpster?
Limbs and trunk sections can go in, cut short enough to lie flat below the rim. Big trunk rounds are heavy, so load them low.
Will the scale ticket help with my insurance claim?
The ticket shows the date and the net weight of the haul. Ask your insurer whether they want a copy for the claim.
