Yard Waste and Brush Dumpster Rental
Branches and brush are bulky but light, so you size a yard waste dumpster by space. Sod and soil are the exception: they follow the heavy-debris rules.

What size dumpster do I need for yard waste?
A 10-yard dumpster fits a weekend brush and shrub cleanup. A 15-yard fits a tree trimming job or a fence teardown. A 20-yard fits a large lot clearing with lots of limbs. Branches are light and bulky, so space runs out before weight does.
| Job | Usual size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shrubs, brush and bagged leaves | 10-yard | Bag or bundle loose leaves. |
| Tree trimming or fence teardown | 15-yard | Cut limbs short so they lie flat. |
| Large lot clearing | 20-yard | Limbs are bulky and light. |
| Sod, soil or rock | 10-yard or 15-yard | Heavy debris: loaded halfway only. |
Typical sizing based on industry-standard volumes.
How much does yard waste weigh?
Branches and prunings weigh about 127 lb per loose cubic yard, by EPA's factor. Mixed yard waste runs about 250 lb, and leaves 250 to 500 lb. A 20-yard full of branches weighs about 2,540 lb, well under its 3 tons. Soil on roots and wet leaves add weight.
Sod, dirt and rock count as heavy debris and follow the halfway rule. If you go over the included tons, extra weight is $75 per ton, billed by the pound. Read how dumpster weight is billed.
Weights: EPA Volume-to-Weight Conversion Factors (loose cubic yards).
Where should a yard waste dumpster go?
Put a yard waste dumpster on the driveway, not the lawn. A loaded bin and the roll-off truck can rut soft grass and crack sprinkler heads. The truck typically needs about 60 ft of straight approach and about 23 ft of clearance from branches and wires.
- Trim low branches over the drive before delivery so the truck can raise the bed.
- Our driver sets the dumpster on wooden boards to protect the concrete.
- Mark sprinkler heads near the drive edge.
How do I fit more brush in the dumpster?
Cut limbs into 4 to 6 ft lengths and lay them flat, all facing the same way. Crisscrossed branches leave air pockets and fill a dumpster fast. Put heavy logs on the floor, then brush on top, and keep everything level with the top rim.
An overfilled dumpster can't go on the road. If branches stick up above the rim, the driver can't haul it and a $125 dry-run fee applies. More tips: how to load a dumpster.
What can't go in a yard waste dumpster?
Brush, limbs, leaves, shrubs, fence boards and old landscape timbers can all go in a yard waste dumpster, cut to lie flat. Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer chemicals, fuel and batteries can't go in. Mowers and other engines must have their fuel and oil drained first.
Not allowed in any dumpster
- Hazardous chemicals, solvents and pool chemicals
- Wet or liquid paint
- Batteries of any kind, including car batteries
- Motor oil, fuel and other liquids
Texas landfills can't accept lead-acid batteries, used oil or bulk liquids (30 TAC §330.15).
Allowed for $50 each
- Mattresses and box springs
- Car and truck tires
- Fridges, freezers, window AC units and other Freon appliances
These cost more because the landfill must process them separately.
Yard waste dumpster questions
Will tree limbs fill the dumpster before the weight limit?
Limbs usually fill the space first because they are light and bulky. Cut them short and lay them flat to fit more.
Can I put tree stumps in the dumpster?
Stumps can go in. Knock off as much soil as you can, because dirt on the roots adds weight.
Is sod treated like dirt?
Sod carries soil, so it follows the heavy-debris rule: a 10 or 15-yard, loaded halfway.
Can old fence boards go in with the brush?
Fence boards and posts can go in with brush. Concrete footings on the posts count as heavy debris, so break them off or keep them low.
